[Finale] Manual spacing resets when moving notes

One of the features of Finale is the beauty of the default spacing and the wide range of customizations.

By using a function called a beat chart, you can manually adjust the spacing of each note or rest as needed, but if you change the pitch of a note after manually setting the spacing, the manual setting you made will be canceled and the spacing will revert to the default setting.

This has been a problem with Finale for some time. It is caused by the automatic spacing function working in an unintended way, so you can avoid this problem by unchecking “Preferences > Edit > Automatic Spacing”.

If you uncheck this “Automatic Spacing”, naturally the spacing, which is one of Finale's strengths, will no longer be applied automatically in all cases, but you can manually apply the same spacing as when automatically applied by selecting a range and pressing ⌘ + 4 (Ctrl + 4 on Windows).

Therefore, once you become familiar with how to use Finale, it may be better to use it with “Automatic Spacing” unchecked.

--------

This is not the case with other music notation software such as Dorico or MuseScore, so it can be said that this is a problem specific to Finale. However, personally, I don't mind this problem, which has a workaround that is not too inconvenient, considering the richness of Finale's spacing functions.

A famous Japanese composer Mr. Takashi Yoshimatsu once said in an interview, “If you compare Finale to a car, it's like a manual car, and that's what's good about it”, and this problem reminds me of those words. Finale's shrewish nature may be what attracts expert users.
